Top 30 Phrases to Talk to Your Grandparents in Kannada

If you grew up in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, or Germany, you probably know the exact feeling of the Sunday WhatsApp video call to India. Your parents hand you the phone, you see your Ajji and Thatha (grandparents) smiling brightly on the screen, and you freeze. You manage a quick "Hi, I'm good" or "Chennagiddini" at best, and proceed to respond in English, before awkwardly handing the phone back to your mom.

You understand what they are saying, but speaking back feels impossible.

Your grandparents might not be entirely comfortable in English, and you are not comfortable in Kannada. Speaking even a little bit of Kannada bridges the generational gap, shows immense respect, and transforms those awkward video calls into genuine conversations.

Here is your survival guide to speaking with your grandparents, complete with the cultural nuances you need to know.

On a Call: Greetings and Check-ins in Kananda

Start strong. Ditch the English "Hello" and use these standard, respectful Kannada greetings.

  • Namaskāra Ajji / Thatha (ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಅಜ್ಜಿ / ತಾತ) - Greetings Grandma / Grandpa!
  • Hēgiddīrā? (ಹೇಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ?) - How are you? (This uses the respectful plural form. For youngsters you would use the singular Hēgiddīyā).
  • Nānu chennāgiddīni (ನಾನು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದ್ದೀನಿ) - I am doing well / I am fine.
  • Nīvu ēn māḍtā iddīrā? (ನೀವು ಏನ್ ಮಾಡ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದೀರಾ?) - What are you doing right now? (You can even drop the Nīvu if you choose, and just say ēn māḍtā iddīrā?)
  • Tumbā dinagaḷinda mātāḍisilla (ತುಂಬಾ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾತಾಡಿಸಿಲ್ಲ) - We haven't spoken in many days.

How to Enquire about Health and Well-being in Kannada

Grandparents will deeply appreciate you checking in on their well-being. Asking about their health shows maturity and deep care.

  • Hushārāgiddīrā? (ಹುಷಾರಾಗಿದ್ದೀರಾ?) - Are you feeling well? / Are you healthy?
  • Mātre togoṇḍrā? (ಮಾತ್ರೆ ತಗೊಂಡ್ರಾ?) - Did you take your tablets / medicines?
  • Mai kai nōvu ideyā? (ಮೈ ಕೈ ನೋವು ಇದೆಯಾ?) - Do you have body aches? (A very common grandparent ailment to check on!)
  • Svalpa rest māḍi (ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ರೆಸ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿ) - Please take some rest.
  • Nidhānavāgi naḍīri (ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನಡೀರಿ) - Please walk slowly/carefully.

Mealtime in Kannada: Ajji’s Love Language

In a Kannada household and generally in Indian households, food is how elders show love. Whether you are visiting India or they are visiting you abroad, meals are the center of family life.

To navigate a meal, you need to know a few core command words (always in their respectful forms):

Bēku (Want), Bēḍa (Don't want), Sāku (Enough), Koḍi (Give), and Hāki (Serve/Put).

Pair these with common everyday foods like Anna (Rice), Sāru (Spiced Soup style dish, also known as Rasam), Dōse (Savoury crepes, also known as Dosa), Mosaru (Curd/Yogurt), Majjige (Buttermilk), Palya (Vegetable dish) and Uppinakāyi (Spicy Pickle), and you are ready for any meal!

  • Ūṭa āytā? (ಊಟ ಆಯ್ತಾ?) - Have you eaten? (Expect this to be their first question to you on any call. Ūṭa āytā is not just about food - in Kannada it holds the same place as greetings like Hello and Good morning or Good afternoon in other languages. It says - I enquire about your meal because I care for your well being).
  • Nanna ūṭa āytu, nimdu? (ನನ್ನ ಊಟ ಆಯ್ತು, ನಿಮ್ದು?) - I have eaten, what about yours?
  • Ēnu aḍuge māḍidri? (ಏನು ಅಡುಗೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ರಿ?) - What did you cook today?
  • Anna sāru hāki (ಅನ್ನ ಸಾರು ಹಾಕಿ) - Please serve me rice and rasam.
  • Uppinakāyi koḍi (ಉಪ್ಪಿನಕಾಯಿ ಕೊಡಿ) - Please give me the pickle.
  • Innu svalpa bēku (ಇನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬೇಕು) - I want a little more.
  • Idu bēḍa, adu bēku (ಇದು ಬೇಡ, ಅದು ಬೇಕು) - I don't want this, I want that.
  • Sāku sāku! (ಸಾಕು ಸಾಕು!) - Enough, enough! (Essential when Ajji is trying to overfeed you!).
  • Tumbā ruchiyāgide! (ತುಂಬಾ ರುಚಿಯಾಗಿದೆ!) - It is very delicious!
  • Hotte tumbitu (ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ತುಂಬಿತು) - My stomach is full.

4. How to Speak about Your Daily Life in Kannada (School & Work)

Grandparents love hearing about your day, even if it is just mundane details about school or your job. Keep it simple and relatable.

  • Nanna class mugīthu (ನನ್ನ ಕ್ಲಾಸ್ ಮುಗೀತು) - My class is finished.
  • Ivatthu tumbā kelsa itthu (ಇವತ್ತು ತುಂಬಾ ಕೆಲಸ ಇತ್ತು) - Today there was a lot of work.
  • Nāle rāja ide (ನಾಳೆ ರಜೆ ಇದೆ) - Tomorrow is a holiday / day off.
  • Horagaḍe hōgiddrā? (ಹೊರಗಡೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ರಾ?) - Did you go outside today?
  • Nīvu tv nōḍtā iddīrā? (ನೀವು ಟಿವಿ ನೋಡ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದೀರಾ?) - Are you watching TV right now?

5. How to Show Affection, Say Goodbye in Kannada

Distance is hard for diaspora families. These phrases help bridge the physical gap between you and your grandparents as you wrap up the call.

  • Nimma nenapāgtide (ನಿಮ್ಮ ನೆನಪಾಗ್ತಿದೆ) - I am missing you.
  • Bēga banni illige (ಬೇಗ ಬನ್ನಿ ಇಲ್ಲಿಗೆ) - Come here (visit us) soon.
  • Nāvu alli bartīvi (ನಾವು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಬರ್ತೀವಿ) - We will come there (to India) soon.
  • Ammange / Appange phone koḍtīni (ಅಮ್ಮಂಗೆ / ಅಪ್ಪಂಗೆ ಫೋನ್ ಕೊಡ್ತೀನಿ) - I will give the phone to Mom / Dad now. (The perfect transition when you run out of things to say!)
  • Hōgbartīni (ಹೋಗ್ಬರ್ತೀನಿ) - I will take leave now. (Remember: Never just say "I am going" in Kannada, as it is considered inauspicious. Always say Hōgbartīni, which literally means "I will go and come back").
